China and South Korea were the top winners of the 11th Asian Film Awards, held in Hong Kong’s Cultural Center on the night of March 21.

Park Chan-wook’s erotic drama The Handmaiden was the top winner of the night with four prizes: Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Newcomer (Kim Tae-ri) and Best Supporting Actress (Moon So-ri). The film had the most number of nominations out of the other films.

Two other South Korean films picked up prizes – Na Hong-jin for Best Director for The Wailing and Best Original Music for The Age of Shadows, giving South Korea six wins out of fifteen categories.

Feng Xiaogang’s I Am Not Madame Bovary won three awards – Best Cinematography, Best Actress (Fan Bingbing) and Best Film. China also won a fourth prize with Best Sound for Crosscurrent.

Tadanobu Asano becomes the first actor in the award’s history to win prizes for two consecutive years with a Best Actor prize for domestic drama Harmonium. Asano won the Best Supporting Actor prize last year for Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Journey to the Shore.

After picking up the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, Asghar Farhadi picked up the Best Screenplay prize for The Salesman.

After two years in Macau, the Asian Film Awards returned to Hong Kong this year. Instead of the usual Hong Kong Convention Center venue, the award moved to the Hong Kong Cultural Center, where the Hong Kong Film Awards is also held.
