A fire at Taiwan’s largest multiplex forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people and abruptly cut a film premiere short.

According to local media reports, the fire broke out around 8:10pm in a fast food restaurant located in the second floor of Taipei’s Vie Show Hsin Yi Cinema complex. Firefighters arrived at the scene and evacuated nearly 1,000 people from the building. The fire was put out about an hour later. No one was hurt.

Five of the cinema’s 18 auditoriums were holding the premiere event for local thriller Who Killed Cock Robin (目擊者). The film’s director and actors were among the attendees. Actress Alice Ko later complained on her Facebook page that the corridors were congested by evacuees slowing down and taking photos or videos on their cell phones.

Director Kevin Chu, who was also at the premiere, also posted photos from the scene on his Facebook page.

Vie Show Cinema says the cinema will resume partial operations tomorrow. It will provide refunds to ticket holders for any show after 6pm that night.
