Beauty and the Beast managed to win a fourth consecutive weekend at the South Korea box office thanks to a lack of new competitors.

The Disney fairy tale earned an additional ₩2.92 billion (US$2.57 million) from 347,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday. It has made a total of ₩37.9 billion (US$33.4 million) from 4.62 million admissions. It is set to overtake Zootopia’s 4.7 million admissions this week.

Showbox’s The Prison (프리즌) remained in second place with ₩2.16 billion (US$1.90 million) from 250,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday. The action revenge film has made ₩21.7 billion (US$19.1 million) from 2.67 million admissions after three weekends.

The most successful newcomer is sci-fi thriller Life. The Sony release earned ₩2.78 billion (US$2.44 million) from 331,000 admissions over its first five days on release. It only had a market share of 18.7% over the weekend.

Lee Yoon-ki’s Oneday (어느날) opened in fourth place. From 532 screens, the CGV Arthouse release earned ₩1.30 billion (US$1.15 million) from 163,000 admissions over its first five days of release.

The fantasy romance stars Kim Nam-gil as an insurance man who sees the spirit of a comatose woman (played by Chun Woo-hee).

Lee’s previous film A Man and A Woman (남과 ) opened with ₩1.01 billion (US$889,000) from 123,000 admissions over its first four days. The infidelity drama made only a total of ₩1.65 billion (US$1.45 million) from 204,000 admissions, despite having Gong Yoo and Jean Do-yeon as the leads.

From 462 screens, local horror film The House of the Disappeared (시간위의 ) earned ₩787 million (US$693,000) from 97,900 admissions over its first five days of release. The Kim Dae-woong film stars Kim Yun-jin as a former housewife trying to find out what happened to her missing son 25 years after going to prison for her husband’s death.

Ghost in the Shell dropped to fifth place in its second weekend, earning ₩594 million (US$522,000) from 68,700 admissions between Friday and Sunday. This marks a massive 82.8% week-on-week drop. The Lotte release has earned ₩6.06 billion (US$5.33 million) from 735,000 admissions.

The Fate of the Furious is expected to outgun all competitors when it opens in South Korean cinemas this week.
