As expected, Alien: Covenant opened at the top of the South Korea box office.
Opening on Tuesday, the public holiday set for the presidential by-election, the sci-fi horror sequel earned ₩4.48 billion (US$4.01 million) from 525,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday. After six days on release, the Ridley Scott film earned a total of ₩7.98 billion (US$7.15 million) from 960,000 admissions.
Covenant surpassed the total South Korea gross of Prometheus on Monday. In 2012, Prometheus earned a total of ₩8.60 billion (US$7.71 million) from 971,000 admissions during its theatrical run.
With a week-on-week drop of 48.8%, local comedy The Sheriff in Town (보안관) remained in second place with an additional ₩3.57 billion (US$3.20 million) from 426,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday. The Lotte Entertainment release has earned ₩17.9 billion (US$16.1 million) from 2.21 million admissions after two weekends.
Alien: Covenant and The Sheriff in Town had a market share of 25.8% and 20.6% over the weekend, respectively.
Also opening on Tuesday, local thriller The Tooth and the Nail (석조저택 살인사건) was in fifth place, earning ₩1.25 billion (US$1.12 million) from 150,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday. The Kidari Entertainment release earned ₩2.37 billion (US$2.12 million) from 292,000 admissions over six days on release.
Japanese animated romance A Silent Voice (聲の形) opened in sixth place, earning ₩1.61 billion (US$1.44 million) from 203,000 admission between Tuesday and Sunday.
Dreamworks’ The Boss Baby remained in third place, earning ₩2.79 billion (US$2.50 million) from 348,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday. It has earned ₩14.9 billion (US$13.3 million) from 1.92 million admissions after two weekends.
Last week’s top film Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 dropped to fourth place in terms of admissions, earning ₩2.90 billion (US$2.6 million) from 326,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday with a week-on-week drop of 62.9%. The Marvel Studios film has earned ₩20.9 billion (US$18.8 million) from 2.42 million admissions after two weekends.
Opening on Thursday, Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman earned ₩46.1 million (US$41,300) from 5,930 admissions from 53 screens over four days on release.
In 2013, The Past made ₩117 million (US$105,000) from 15,500 admissions during its theatrical run.
The Merciless (불한당: 나쁜 놈들의 세상), King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Get Out open this weekend.
