The 30th Tokyo International Film Festival (October 25th-November 3rd) made its first program announcement on the second day of the Cannes Film Festival’s Marche du Film.
The first program is Muses of Japanese Cinema, a special retrospective dedicated to four of Japan’s top actresses – Sakura Ando (0.5 mm, 100 Yen Love 百円の恋), Yu Aoi (Hana and Alice 花とアリス, Over the Fence オーバー‧フェンス), Hikari Mitsushima (Love Exposure 愛のむきだし, The End of Summer 夏の終り) and Aoi Miyazaki (The Great Passage 舟を編む, Rage 怒り).
“[The four actresses] have been chosen as the Muses of Japanese Cinema in hour of the powerful sparks they generate on screen, their collaboration with renowned directors and their increasing international stature,” the festival says in the announcement.
Under the festival’s Japan Now program, the retrospective will screen films starring the actresses and include panel discussions with special guests.
The festival also unveiled its visuals, created by photographer and director Mika Ninagawa.
