Beauty and the Beast easily captured its fifth consecutive win at the Japan box office as it speeds towards the ¥10 billion mark.

From 724 locations, the Disney fantasy romance earned an additional ¥435 million (US$3.91 million) from 307,000 admissions on Saturday and Sunday. It has made a total of ¥8.92 billion (US$80.3 million) from 6.37 million admissions.

Local teen romance Peach Girl (ピーチガール) opened in third place, earning ¥143 million (US$1.29 million) from 120,000 admissions over its first two days on release. Based on a manga by Miwa Ueda, the Shochiku release stars Mitsuku Yamamoto, boy band member Kei Inoo and Sonny Chiba’s son Mackenyu.

Fantasy drama 君のまなざし opened in sixth place, but grosses were not made available. The film was produced by controversial religious group Happy Science’s production company New Star Production and its founder Okawa Ryuho. It was distributed by Nikkatsu and Tokyo Theater.

Opening on Friday instead of the usual Saturday, Arrival opened in seventh place, earning ¥148 million (US$1.34 million) from 196 locations over its first three days on release.

Opening day-and-date with its Netflix release, animated film BLAME! earned ¥30.1 million (US$271,000) from 27 locations over its first two days on release.

What a Wonderful Family 2 (家族はつらいよ2), To Each His Own (ちょっと今から仕事やめてくる), Radiance (), The Light Between Oceans open this weekend.
