The apes soundly won the war at the China box office this weekend as The War For the Planet of the Apes saw a franchise-best opening.

With a screening share of 45.1%, the sci-fi epic warned RMB401 million (US$61 million) from approximately 11.6 million admissions over its first three days on release.

Three years ago, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened with RMB290 million (US$44 million) for a total of RMB709 million (US$108 million). With no high-profile releases until the National Day holiday, War will likely surpass the gross of its predecessor.

Spider-Man: Homecoming dropped to second place. Retaining a screening share of 17.7%, the superhero film earned an additional RMB98.3 million (US$14.9 million) from 2.81 million admissions between Friday and Sunday. The Jon Watts film has made RMB697 million (US$106 million) after 11 days on release, surpassing the local gross for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Japanese animated film Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale (劇場版 ソードアート‧オンラインオーディナル‧スケール) opened in third place. With a screening share of 10.8%, the film adaptation of light novel series earned RMB40.6 million (US$6.17 million) from 1.35 million admissions over its first three days on release.

Although the opening is impressive for a Japanese animated film that’s not aimed at a family audience, it will likely not surpass the film’s US$22.1 million domestic gross in China.

With a screening share of 7.67%, Spanish thriller The Invisible Guest opened in fourth place, earning RMB32.6 million (US$4.95 million) from 1.06 million over its first three days on release. The film – which is already on Netflix in multiple countries – saw the lowest Sunday drop among the top five films.

With a screening share of just 6%, Danny Pang’s youth drama Growing Pains (會痛的十七歲) earned RMB6.14 million (US$933,000) over its first three days on release. The film stars Xu Jiao as a rebellious and anime-loving high schooler who falls in love with her classmate, played by singer Hu Xia.

Dunkirk has made RMB334 million (US$50.7 million) after 18 days. Cars 3 has made RMB136.6 million (US$20.7 million) after 24 days.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard opens this weekend.
