This year’s animation director in focus at the Tokyo International Film Festival (October 25th-November 3rd), Keiichi Hara offered a quick teaser of his upcoming film.
The teaser came during a post-screening talk for Crayon Shin-chan: The Storm Called: The Adult Empire Strikes Back (クレヨンしんちゃん 嵐を呼ぶ モーレツ!オトナ帝国の逆襲), also attended by director/former animation storyboard artist Shinji Higuchi.
The talk began with a 25-minute discussion about their memories of the Osaka World Expo (seen in the beginning of the film), Higuchi’s love of Hara’s films on the Crayon Shin-chan franchise and Hara’s experiences on it (he drew storyboards for 13 of the films, wrote ten of them and directed six).
Afterwards, the director presented a single teaser image from his upcoming film: An adolescent girl walking through a green portal of sorts with a bicycle. Hara says that the adventure is his first traditional fantasy film, about a girl from the real world who ventures into another realm. The untitled film is still in production and is set to be completed in 2018.
Hara is attending all seven screenings of the retrospective, which also includes Miss Hokusai (百日紅 ~Miss HOKUSAI~), Colorful (カラフル), Summer Days With Coo (河童のクゥと夏休み), and his live-action debut Dawn of a Filmmaker: The Keisuke Kinoshita Story (はじまりのみち).
