Netflix has tapped Next Entertainment World (NEW) to be the South Korea theatrical distributor for Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming monster fantasy Okja (옥자). Bong’s native home will be one of the only territories in the world where the film will get a theatrical release.

The US$50 million project will receive a global release on Netflix on June 28. NEW has set the theatrical release date in June, but has not specified whether it will open before Netflix’s global rollout.

Featuring a cast of Hollywood and South Korean actors – including Tilda Swinton, Ahn Seo-hyun and Jake Gyllenhaal – Okja is about a young girl’s effort to protect her best friend, an animal that goes by the name of “Okja”.
