With no formidable challenger, holdover films held their ground in the final weekend of the spring holiday in Japan.

With a week-on-week increase of 16%, Sing made an additional ¥470 million (US$4.26 million) from 260,000 admissions on Saturday and Sunday. The Dreamworks animated film has made ¥3.11 billion (US$28.2 million) after three weekends.

Disney’s Moana remained in second place, earning an additional ¥377 million (US$3.41 million) from 329,000 admissions on Saturday and Sunday. It has made ¥3.57 billion (US$32.4 million) after four weekends.

Doraemon the Movie 2017: Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi (映画ドラえもん のび太の南極カチコチ大冒険) held onto third place in terms of admissions, earning ¥279 million (US$2.53 million) from 256,000 admissions on Saturday and Sunday. The animated adventure has made ¥3.43 billion (US$31 million) after five weekends.

Kong: Skull Island easily passed the ¥1 billion mark in its second weekend, making ¥332 million (US$3.01 million) from 211,000 admissions on Saturday and Sunday. The Warner Brothers release has made ¥1.15 billion (US$10.4 million).

None of last weekend’s new film debuted in the top ten. The most successful newcomer is Moonlight at 15th place. Opening in 75 locations, the Academy Award winner opened on Friday and earned ¥65.1 million (US$589,000) over three days. It’s released locally by Phantom Films.

Jackie failed to capture the same audience over the weekend. From 87 locations, the biopic made ¥31.6 million (US$286,000) over its first three days of release. It’s released locally by Kino Films.

The Lego Batman Movie failed to attract family audiences, making only ¥38.7 million (US$350,000) from 276 locations on Saturday and Sunday. In 2014, The Lego Movie earned only ¥196 million (US$1.77 million) at the Japan box office.

Daytime Shooting Star (ひるなかの流星) has made ¥729 million (US$6.6 million) after two weekends. Policeman and Me (PJK) climbed up to sixth place in admissions and has made ¥568 million (US$5.14 million) after two weekends.

Lion, Ghost in the Shell and T2: Trainspotting open this weekend.
