Aamir Khan has outdone Aamir Khan in Taiwan as Dangal is set to overtake 3 Idiots as the top-grossing Indian film ever in Taiwan.
This past weekend, the fact-based wrestling drama earned NT$3.84 million (US$126,000) from 16 locations in Taipei, representing a week-on-week increase of 24.3%. It surpassed the total Taipei gross of Khan’s PK in just 8 days.
As of Tuesday, April 4th, the Garageplay release has already earned NT$12.9 million (US$425,000) after 12 days of release, according to website Taipei Box Office. It is expected to surpass 3 Idiots’ Taipei gross of NT15.2 million (US$499,000) by the end of the week. Local media report that the film has already surpassed 3 Idiots’ nationwide gross, but exact numbers are not known as weekly nationwide box office numbers are generally not made available to the public.
Khan stars in the Nitesh Tiwari film as a former wrestler who raises his two daughters to defy gender traditions and become wrestling champions.
Dangal is currently playing in 50 locations nationwide and is expected to expand this weekend. Some cinemas are also lining up additional shows this weekend.
The Taiwan Film Institute is expected to issue final nationwide numbers in early June.
